It probably comes to you as no surprise that adults between the ages of 13 and 64 are spending over a third of their time online using social networks. It’s one of the first things I do when I get online, check Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to catch up with friends, get responses to news items (Ben Affleck is going to be Batman? Who knew?) and see what’s going on in the world. So that statistic on the graph is probably not that exciting or interesting.
While I am interested in that statistic and I’ll get to that in a second, what’s grabbing me right now are the next three. Email, online video and search. If we look at this graph for an overall trend instead of specific data, the thing that people are spending almost all of their time on when online is looking for and digesting information:
- Email is about connecting information with other people and receiving information in return.
- Online video is a medium to easily ingest information (even if that information is just a video of Grumpy Cat).
- Search is, of course, the way we find specific information that doesn’t come across our path in our newsfeeds.
So we spend most of our time online wrapped up in finding and ingesting information. These are the habits we as an online culture have developed.
